Even though mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and suicide have been on the rise the past decade, there is currently a mental health professional shortage in our nation. We are facing a crisis where there is a shortage of behavioral health care providers just at a time when there is an increased demand for services. Mental health organizations are understaffed. According to published data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 47% of the U.S. population in 2022 was living in a mental health workforce shortage area.
For this reason, leaders in the field have encouraged mental health professionals to push out evidenced based resources to the public in hopes to support people who face barriers in accessing professional help. The demographic reported of greatest concern is our youth, with suicide being the 2nd leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 10-34 (CDC 2021). Disheartening numbers of youth struggle with reports of self-harm and disordered eating, also presenting with underdeveloped social and emotional regulation skills.
